Snippet #1:
“I love the way you say my name El. I hope I’m not being too forward, but I have to tell you that you are the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. Since the first moment I laid eyes on you, I could hardly think of anything else. I tried to grill Jess about you last night, but she wasn’t giving anything away. She told me to ask you myself.” He laughed. His laugh, it was like a summer breeze. I instantly knew that I would want to hear more of it and I would do whatever it took to get it out of him. I wanted to be the one to make him laugh. We start to walk. “So here we are. I’ll start with an easy question. Where are you from El?”
Snippet #2:
I place my hands flat on the table. I lean forward and look into her eyes so she can feel the effects of what I’m about to say. “I assure you El, I am not going anywhere unless you are by my side.” I stress the next couple words. “I have never been as intrigued by anyone as I am by you.” I ease back into the booth. “So, I’ll ask you the same question. Are you planning on sticking around?”
Snippet #3:
Growing up everyone has a dream and expectations. Most know what they want to be, what they want to have and what type of person they want to be with. Once upon a time, I thought I knew those things too. Turns out, what we think we want and our reality are two totally different things. What we expect and what actually happens are rarely ever the same thing. So here goes…this is my story, or at least what I can remember…..

End Game: A Gamer Romance
by Lisa Swallow

Blurb
He’s my knight in shining armour, but not the romantic kind a girl dreams about. This one invaded my online world and threw everything into chaos.
My sorcerer can kick his ass in the game, but real life kicks mine. Gaining experience points online is easier than in reality, and when I play, I know where my quests lead. In the real world, the storylines confuse me, and I don’t know which direction I’m heading in.
In the game, I’m in control.
Or I was until he arrived.
This guy never shares anything about himself, and I only know him as ‘Thorsday’. My Aussie gaming nemesis can’t be a blond haired, blue-eyed god in reality.
Can he?
There’s something about this enigmatic man that intrigues me, and the more we play together, the bigger my desire to meet him. And I know he feels the same.
The problem is, if I allow my game world to merge with reality, I could die standing in the fire.

Excerpt One:

“I’m curious. How old were you when you realized you could bend others to your will?”
She forced herself to reply. “What?”
“Oh come now, Astasiya, feigning ignorance doesn’t suit you. Order me to do something instead. I dare you.”
A violent tremor shook her, rendering her speechless. For years she had kept a lid on her abilities, playing it off whenever the occasional demand slipped. It was easy to laugh off coincidences with normal people, but there was nothing normal about this man. He would see right through any charade she threw up as was evident by his blatant dare.
“I thought it might be coincidence with the hysterical woman.” He pushed off the wall, his steps casual as he sauntered towards her. “Persuasion is a very rare gift, after all.” He stopped just in front of her to tuck a stray blonde strand behind her ear. “But that reporter was all you.”
She forced herself to swallow, mouth dry. “How long have you been watching me?”
“Long enough.” His intimate gaze stroked over her, touching on all the places that could make a woman squirm. “It’s customary for one in my position to kill you on sight. Fortunately for you, darling, I’m not an admirer of our archaic laws.”

Excerpt Two:
His little complication was playing with fire. He welcomed the challenge and the change in air between them. It was starting to feel a little melancholy during their walk down memory lane. Now they were back on track. “Are you trying to deal with me, Miss Davenport?”
Fierce green eyes met his, provoking all manner of inappropriate thoughts. Like what they would look like in the throes of passion. “No, I’m giving you my terms.”
He nearly laughed. No woman ever gave him terms for a date.
“I will give you two answers.” He tucked a soft strand behind her ear and let his fingers drift down her neck. “And I will consider defining Ichorian more clearly for you.” By showing, not telling.
She licked her lips and shook her head. “Three answers and you define Ichorian now.”
He moved into her personal space, gripping her hip with one hand to hold her in place when she tried to move away. Their foolish conversation had already gone on longer than he intended. “We leave at seven.” He bent so their mouths were a hairsbreadth apart. “And I will only answer your three questions after the gala, not before or during.”

Excerpt Three:
“What are you doing here, Astasiya?”
She tried to turn to face him, but he held her in place. He wouldn’t hurt her. She was sure of it. But he sounded furious.
“Answer me.”
Right. Time to improvise. “Well, most people come to clubs to dance.” Even as she said it, she knew it was an absurd excuse. She was here looking for him and he knew it.
“I don’t see you dancing.”
“That’s because I’m being manhandled.” Asshole.
“This is not a game.” The low rumble in his voice made her squirm. That tone was meant for the bedroom. It required compliance and submission, and at the same time seduced. A man of his experience would know what he wanted and how he wanted it. He would be nothing like her previous experiences.
He bit her ear to bring her back to the present. What would that mouth feel like on other parts of her body? He seemed to enjoy nibbling. Her nipples tightened at the prospect of him focusing his attentions there. “Who told you to come here?”
“Why do you care?” Her voice was a little higher than she intended. He evoked a response from her unlike any other. Not that her limited experiences was much of a comparison.
“Because whoever sent you here was trying to get you killed.”

WHEN IT HITS YOU

Electronic. That’s how my love life was supposed to stay. Just me and my B.O.B.s (battery-operated boyfriends, if you don’t know). I didn’t expect to get partnered at work with the Adonis in Ralph Lauren. And I certainly never thought he’d turn out to be anything but an arrogant jerk.

Lyssa Bates doesn’t need a man. The twenty-six-year-old financial analyst is more than fulfilled by her career, friends, and a ready supply of double-A batteries. Her relationship with Hayden King is purely professional—and that’s how she intends to keep it. But accidental kisses in Dallas, all-nighters in Chicago, and hot tub confessions in Baltimore mess with her head and shake her resistance. Especially when he turns his charms full on her.

Why is it that whenever you’re not looking for love, that’s exactly when it hits you? ~Lyssa

“A quirky light-hearted romance written in a strong voice. A fun read from beginning to end.”
~The Jaded Kat

WHEN IT HOOKS YOU

Three dates. It was only supposed to be three dates—he was only meant to be a fling. I didn’t want to feel all of this for him. And I certainly hadn’t counted on him keeping such a deal-breaking secret from me.

Till death is too long for Trish Cerise. The twenty-seven year old receptionist is tired of men asking for her forever when she just wants to keep things light and fun. World-traveling businessman Adam Helms steps off the elevator and into her life with his own reasons for keeping relationships at a safe distance. Together, they’re destined for the most glorious short-term romance in history…until they break their own rules and Trish learns something about Adam she wishes she never knew.

I know a future with him is impossible, but how do you break away from such an intense, consuming, heart-crushing love when it hooks you?~Trish

“A refreshing contemporary romance. The twists and turns make this a page turner.”
~Keep Calm and Novel On

WHEN IT HOLDS YOU
Virtual. That’s where she was supposed to stay—only in my online gaming world. I never intended to meet up with her in real life. And I sure as hell hadn’t counted on her being who she is.

Cliff Walsh has dozens of hot, smart, and willing paramours in his video games. Who needs to look further? The twenty-eight year old attorney is done getting his heart smashed by real-life women who fit his perfect-mate checklist. From now on, he vows to keep his romances digital-only…until a certain redheaded gamer twists all his preconceptions and touches a place in his heart he didn’t know existed.

I always thought I knew what love would look like, but sometimes you don’t recognize it until the moment when it holds you. ~Cliff

WHEN IT HITS YOU – First Kiss
“Do you really, truly, honestly believe an electronic device can replace having a man in your life?” He watched her with the same intensity she remembered from Indiana, the look she hadn’t been able to decipher when they’d been boiling corn at the farm. Now she thought she might understand where it came from.
“Afraid you might be replaceable?” she asked.
“I would be if I thought it was in any way possible—which it’s not.”
“I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree on that.” She looked down at her bottle, swirling it. “Do you want the rest of this? I’m not in a mood to drink tonight.”
Hayden shrugged and took the bottle, tilting it for a long pull before he set it next to the empty near his feet. When he straightened, his mouth flattened into a perfect straight line. He leaned back and turned his face toward her, resting his head against the half wall. His thick eyebrows lowered over his darkened blue eyes that glinted in the firelight. “Can I ask you something else?”
The tender earnestness in his voice inspired her to join him in reclining against the wall, mirroring him as she rested her head and tilted her face toward him. “When have I ever stopped you?”
“This little friend of yours…can it do this?” He lifted his arm and traced his fingertips down the side of her face before cupping her jaw. He kept his thumb at her cheekbone, lightly stroking.
If she hadn’t promised to maintain eye contact, she’d have shoved not only her eyes, but also everything else she had away from him. Alcohol had obviously inspired his open show of affection, but she was still sober and couldn’t as easily explain away the electrified thrill that ran through her at his touch.
He dropped his thumb to her mouth and tickled back and forth over her lower lip, daring her to hold strong. “Can it do this?” His mouth moved to hers, pressing against her lips in the slightest of kisses and pulling back just long enough for her to reluctantly acknowledge that she wanted him back on her.

WHEN IT HOOKS YOU – First Kiss
She started at his touch and tilted her head to look at him. As soon as her eyes locked on his, he dropped his arm and shifted his gaze away from her to look across the wide deck toward the lake. The brilliant blue in the east had darkened to midnight. She turned her whole body to be front-to-front with him. Touching her hand to the side of his face, she brought his focus back to her. She was done waiting for him to make a move.
“I know you said it was best to not get physical,” she said, noting the faint press of new stubble against her palm. “But I hope kisses don’t count because I’m going to kiss you, Mr. Helms. If that goes well, I don’t plan to stop until your face turns purple and you’re gasping for air.”
He didn’t move or say anything to dissuade her, but a terrified flash raced across his eyes—now made coppery under the scorched heavens. Trish plastered her mouth against his. She’d take away his fear. She’d pull him up to the surface of his melancholy sea and breathe lightness into him.

WHEN IT HOLDS YOU – First Kiss
“So you’re actually a redhead, huh?” Cliff asked.
“I am tonight.” She prowled closer and pressed against him, holding two fingers to his lips. The tips of her long purple fingernails tickled against the bottom of his nose. “I’d rather not talk.”
She gave the side of his neck a tentative lick and then touched kisses up his throat and over his face until her mouth was against his. She dropped her hands to run along the sides of his hips, caressing and groping.
His mind sped. His heart galloped. The cool confidence he’d mustered before her arrival evaporated. He wasn’t sure he could do this. He didn’t know this woman at all and now she was feasting on him. He’d much rather have talked with her for a little while before jumping right into it.
Channeling his inner alpha, he forced himself to return the kiss. He slid his hands over the slick fabric of her cape to the small of her back and pulled her close. She was significantly shorter than him, even in the spiked heels. Her body felt so soft against his. Her lips tasted like strawberries.
I can do this.
He did know this woman. It was Claire, the willful strategist with whom he’d been rampaging the kingdomside. He noticed that though she’d been aggressive in her advance, she kept the kiss to lips only, almost as if waiting for him to take it to the next level. He liked this small show of submission.
I can totally do this.

Snippet #1
“I miss him so much. I don’t know how to do this without him.”
Startled by Cam’s whisper, I jerked my gaze toward him. The raw pain in his words sent heartache straight to my soul. “I know, buddy. But, you’re a great dad. The boys are lucky to have you. It will be hard, but it’s not impossible. And I’ll be here to help you every step of the way.” I reached out and squeezed his shoulder.
“You don’t have to do that. You and Steph have your own lives.” Cam protested.
“Just try to get rid of me. Besides, the boys love to play together, so we’ll have to be here a lot to keep the four of them entertained.” I nodded toward the house. “You ready to head in?”
We entered the house through the garage.
Cam stood in the middle of the living room. “I don’t even know what to do,” he whispered raggedly.
“Feel like bed yet? Or maybe a beer?” I wasn’t sure what the best option was. No way could I leave Cam’s side with him hurting.
Snippet #2
Dropping the large limb onto the growing pile we planned to use for a big bonfire once school was out for the summer, I lifted my shirt to wipe the sweat from my brow. “Well, we appreciate being able to hang out here. Somehow it’s easier when the boys are all together. In theory, it should be harder, but it’s almost like they keep each other entertained. And having two pairs of eyes and arms is a lot easier than being on my own.” I knew Cam understood what I was saying, he had commented recently on how it was easier to have the whole group together.
“You should sell the house, or rent it out. Move out here with the boys and me.” Cam spoke nonchalantly as if he’d not made an offer that would ultimately change the course of our lives forever.

Excerpt One:
Amelia touched the metal choker around her neck and grumbled, “This bloody thing follows me even into my dreams.” If she ever got it off, she’d make Jonathan Fitzgerald eat it.
“Amelia,” Tom’s deep voice rumbled, “this isn’t a dream.”
“What?”
“You’re not dreaming.”
She smiled and shook her head. Of course she was dreaming. What else could this be? There was water, sunshine, and trees. “I wish for you to go now.” No need for the handsome Sentinel to spoil her temporary reprieve from reality.
“I wish I could, but I’m stuck here for the foreseeable future.” Tom rose to his full height beside her and held out a hand. “Let’s get back to the cabin. You need a shower, and I need to get some sleep.”
She frowned at his long, masculine fingers. He wiggled them once in an impatient gesture that matched the tick in his square jaw. She stood up and found the top of her head barely met his chin. The heat radiating from his broad chest felt very real, so real that she pinched her thigh to test his theory. A slight pain radiated up her side, making her eyes widen. “I’m not dreaming?”
He gave her a small smile. “No, Amelia. You’re very much awake.”

Excerpt Two:
“Easy way, or hard way? Ladies choice.”
Amelia’s pulse leapt. She had to clear her throat twice to speak. “Excuse me?” He couldn’t mean. . .
“Hard way it is.” Tom stepped forward, and caught her hip before she could scramble to the side.
“What-?” The words froze in her throat when his opposite hand snaked around her back to the gun tucked into her shorts.
He tsked. “Someone was in my room. Find anything else interesting while snooping?”
She bristled at that. “I was not snooping.” Liar.
“No?” He removed the weapon, and threw it on the bed. Instead of taking a step back, he placed his palm against her lower back, and pulled her closer. Her hands flattened against his chest to maintain a slight gap between them. It did nothing to ease the flutter in her lower belly, or dispel the heat climbing up her neck.
“So the gun from my nightstand magically appeared in your shorts? That’s a neat trick, sweetheart.”

Excerpt Three:
“Gentleman,” Tom greeted after assembling the communication unit. “Blake sends his regards. Who wants to dance next?” Knowing his words would reveal his location, he moved deeper into the parking lot on the other side, away from the sidewalk and further from Amelia. He really hoped she’d been smart enough to hide in the car, and not try to find him.
“Hello, son,” his father replied. “You mind telling me what the fuck you’re doing?”
John Fitzgerald using curse words brought a smile to Tom’s face. He’d thoroughly pissed off the CRF’s CEO enough that he had lost his cool over the communication channel. Nice. How far could he push him?
“Right now?” Tom asked, voice low. “I’m taking out your unit. Or did you mean in general?” A flash of metal grabbed his attention. Sentinel Charlie was in a crouch position thirty feet to his left, and facing the wrong direction.
Tom shook his head. How many times had he told the man to watch his six? Idiot. He took a detour around a few cars to sneak up on his former teammate and slammed his pistol into the back of the kid’s skull.
“Well, that wasn’t even any fun,” Tom said with a dramatic sigh. “You really ought to send Charlie back to training, John. He still hasn’t mastered surveillance.”

He offers her the only thing he’s got: knowledge from the living world. Hel gives him three days. If he can teach her something new, she will return him to the realms of the living.
But the icy Hel seems completely impervious to Baldr’s charms. What’s worse, she already knows everything. By the end of the third day, Baldr realizes he’s only got one chance left to impress her.
Returning to his former life looks like it’s going to depend on Baldr the Beautiful seducing the most formidable woman in the Nine Realms.

Excerpt One
The branch trembled, making the delicate green leaves and white flower clusters dance. A single petal shook free to sail across the bright blue sky. It was so beautiful, caught in the golden light of late afternoon. I couldn’t understand why someone was crying.
The flower petal tumbled through the sky, heedless of the voices below. I liked it. I liked it all, the bright sky, the white flowers, the audacious little green leaves. I tried to turn and follow the petal through the sky, but my neck wasn’t quite working. It didn’t matter anyway. Soon the brave little petal would be swallowed by the blackness creeping into my vision, turning the sky into a little, shrinking circle, growing farther and farther away, until it was entirely gone—
Darkness. Darkness and voices, a soft rush of motion. Then something harsh and acrid, like battlefield smoke, stung my nostrils, and my head spun. I tried to open my eyes.
“What happened?” I moaned.
Someone clucked above me. “Don’t move just yet, my boy.”
The voice sounded old and only mildly sympathetic. I ignored it, pushing myself up to sitting. My head throbbed and my stomach surged, making me gag. Soft hands grabbed my arm, dragging me back to the bed. Her grip felt weak, but I didn’t have the strength to resist.
“Where am I?” I whispered, once my stomach stopped roiling.
“You’re dead, dearie.”
I shook my head, making the room spin. “No. That’s not possible.”
She clucked again. My eyes were adjusting to the gloom, and I could just make out a hunched figure tending to a fire. “Oh, that’s what they all say.”
“No, you don’t understand. I’m—”
“Baldr the Beautiful,” she said. “Óðinn’s favorite son. Yes, yes, we know all about you here.”
“But I can’t die. My mother is Frigg. She traveled the Nine Realms, and everything she found—”
“Promised not to harm you. I know. I heard all about it.”
The old woman turned and gave me a sympathetic, tired smile. She looked like a nice woman, but of course you never can tell. “But your mother couldn’t possibly have gotten a promise from every single thing.”
She hobbled a bit closer to the bed, her arms outstretched with a rough wooden bowl in her hands. “Drink this, dearie. It’ll help.”
I tried to push myself up to sitting. Again, my head and stomach revolted, throbbing and churning. The old woman chuckled sympathetically.
“It takes some getting used to, being dead,” she said. “Tell you what, Baldr the Beautiful. Why don’t we talk about the last thing you remember, hmmm?”

Excerpt Two
It was late afternoon on the third day, the final day, and I was feeling damn near desperate. We’d walked along the river after our morning of sailing, and then, after lunch, I asked to go for another walk in the orchard. This was where Hel had seemed the least comfortable; for some reason, this orchard threw her slightly off her game. It was my last, desperate chance. Perhaps I could stumble on something out here.
“Are these all apples?” I asked. I’d given up trying to offer her some knowledge. Instead I was asking a thousand questions in this hopes she’d slip up.
Hel shook her head. Her back was stiff, and she’d turned her living face away from me. I wished I could ask her why the orchard made her uncomfortable, but I didn’t imagine that question would go over particularly well.
“So…pears? Cherries?”
The trees around us were flowering, filling the air with their delicious perfume. Soft, white petals drifted in the space between us, falling like snow.
She shook her head again, although I wasn’t sure if she was telling me I was wrong or if she was just trying to brush off the stray petals caught in her hair. She was wearing it loose today, and it tumbled down over her shoulders, softening the severe lines of her aggressively unflattering dress.
“Would you even tell me if I guessed?” I asked, with a smile. I picked a blossom from a tree and brought it to my nose. It had a light, sweet fragrance. I examined it. Five soft, white petals unfurled casually from a pollen-laden yellow core.
“Apricots?” I glanced at her.
She looked away so fast her hair whipped across her shoulders. At the same time her dress snagged on a log hidden in the thick grass, and she stumbled.
I moved without thinking, catching her arm in mine. It was only after I closed my hand around the twin bones of her skeletal forearm that I realized it didn’t feel right.
She was warm and soft against my palm. Like skin.
Hel met my eyes and a deep red flush burned across her neck and living cheek. Then she yanked her arm out of my grasp and stumbled backward, her face again a cold, impassive mask.
Perhaps she wasn’t totally immune to my charms after all.
“Pardon me,” I said, holding my hands up in front of me. “I just didn’t want you to break your nose.”
Her lips twitched with the barest hint of a smile, and an absolutely insane idea bubbled through my consciousness.
“Oh, there is something I can teach you,” I whispered.

Excerpt 1:
A slow song came on the radio, and when Ric smiled at her, Katie’s resolve faltered. Don’t ask me to dance, she prayed.
“Wanna dance?”
Oh, shoot.
He held out a hand and she didn’t know what to do. Her hesitation must have been obvious because Ric looked at her meaningfully and cajoled, “It’s just a dance, Katie. We’ve done it before.”
Of course. At the country club. They’d been teenagers and two out of a handful of young people there. Occasionally, they’d be pressed into dancing. It hadn’t been unpleasant. But Ric hadn’t raised her temperature then, not as he did now.
She put her hand in his and her body shivered as he took her into his arms. He pressed his hand against her waist, drawing her closer as they circled the floor with tiny steps. Beat by beat, all her resolve melted until she leaned into him and rested her head lightly on his right shoulder. He brought their hands in so they touched his chest, and she felt the erratic beating of his heart against her fingers. His body was warm and hard, and for the first time in years, Katie felt secure in another’s arms, like she was cherished and protected.

Excerpt 2:
There was a knock at the door and she sighed. What in the world was someone doing here now? Looking out the Judas hole she saw Ric standing there in his ever-present dark suit. She slid the chain back from the door and opened it.
“Hi,” she said, holding the edge of the door with her right hand.
“Hi yourself. Sorry I missed today. We had an accident on the site and I had to be there. Brought you a present, though.” He was all charm and goodwill as he smiled down at her and her annoyance melted away. Briefly, she resented the fact that he could do that to her with only a smile.
“Come in,” she offered, but it came out with little warmth.
“You look exhausted. How did it go?” He stepped into the dining area and put a bottle of champagne on the table as well as a plastic bag.
“We were busy. Really busy,” she added and couldn’t help but give a little laugh of wonder. “I’m beat, but we did okay. The place was packed at lunch.”
“Congratulations. I knew you could do it.”
“Not without your backing.” She folded her hands in front of her. He would show up while she looked a fright. Oh well. She was too tired to be overly concerned about her appearance.
Ric stepped forward, close enough she smelled his expensive cologne. Close enough she could reach out and touch him.
“All you needed was money and a little direction. All the hard work, the vision, was you, Katie.” He tucked a piece of hair behind her ear and her pulse leaped as his fingers grazed her neck.
“I knew I could do it, but I’d hear all the voices of people telling me I was crazy and I’d start doubting.”
“Of course you did. You’re human.” He dropped his hand and put it in his pocket. “But you carried on, followed through.”
His gaze delved deeply into hers as he offered her the one thing she desperately needed.
“I’m proud of you, Katie.”
Tears stung her eyes and she looked down. Not once had someone given her those words, such unqualified validation. Her throat swelled and she didn’t trust herself to speak.
“Was that patronizing? I didn’t mean it to be. I am proud of you. It takes a lot to rise above your insecurities and build something from the beginning.”
She cleared her throat. “Like you did?”
He smiled then, and the warmth of it snuggled around her.
“I’m glad you noticed. I admire your determination. I know it’s not easy. But I didn’t mean to make you cry.” He tilted up her chin with a finger.
“It’s okay,” she replied, taking a deep breath and shaking off his hand, showing him she was fine. “I got a little emotional. I’m tired and it’s been a long day. You run on adrenaline so long and then when it’s gone, you sort of lose it.”
“I should have realized.” He stepped away, gesturing lamely at the table. “I brought champagne and fruit, thinking we could celebrate, but you’re clearly not in the mood for it.”
The thought of kicking back with some high-quality bubbly and Ric had a certain appeal. But Katie was sure that after a glass or two, she’d do something stupid like let down her guard and, at the very least, kiss him again, or let him touch her the way he’d started to the other night.
“Thanks for understanding. Right now all I want is a bath and bed.”
Liar, her inner voice taunted. Her cheeks colored as her innocent words took on an intimate meaning. His eyes pinned her for a long moment and she tucked her fingers into her palms to keep from reaching out to him.
“Why don’t you sit down, and let me take care of everything,” he suggested. He took her arms and pushed her down on to the sofa again. “Relax and give me ten minutes.”
She narrowed her eyes, suspicious. “What are you up to?”
“I left you to shoulder the burden of opening day. Now I’m being a good business partner and trying to make up for it.”
He disappeared into the bathroom and seconds later, she heard water running and a cupboard door opening and closing. The sound of the water filling the tub had a rhythmic quality and her eyes grew heavy as she listened.
Ric came back to the living room and looked around for a moment.
“Nice flowers,” he commented, looking at a bouquet of red roses on the table.
“From Dad and Mom. They sent them today as a congratulations.”
“May I?” He hovered his fingers over a few scarlet blossoms and Katie nodded, wary. What was he going to do with roses?
Sleepy, she burrowed into the cushions and dozed, dimly aware of Ric rummaging through her kitchen. It seemed like only seconds later when he gently shook her shoulder.
“Katie,” he murmured, and she opened her eyes.
He was leaning over her and desire pierced her. She fought the urge to grab the end of his tie and pull him down on top of her where he belonged.
Instead, he straightened and held out a hand. “Your bath awaits.”
Her heart began to pound as she took his hand and let him lead her down the hall. What had he done in her tiny bathroom? And was he seducing her? It was hard to tell with Ric…he was all long looks and light touches. With all the desire snapping between them like sparks, she wasn’t sure what he wanted or expected tonight. She wasn’t sure what she wanted or expected, either.
Katie turned the corner into the bathroom and caught her breath.
Three thick candles sat on the dark-green vanity, their flickering light reflected in the mirror. The calming scent of her lavender bath salts wafted on the moist air and she saw rose petals floating on the water. Her white clothes hamper was pulled close to the edge of the tub, an empty glass and small plate of strawberries and grapes arranged on its top. While her mouth hung open, Ric stepped ahead, undid the wrapper at the top of the bottle and deftly popped the cork. He filled the single glass half-full and put the bottle on the floor beside the hamper.
Turning, he met her wide-eyed gaze and she wondered frantically what came next—what she wanted to happen or what she knew should happen.
He took one step, then another, and a third that took him to her side. “Get some rest,” he whispered, reaching out to squeeze her forearm and dropping the merest hint of a kiss on her cheek.
He left her there in the bathroom, alone with the warm scents and dusky stillness. Still shocked, she heard the front door shut behind him and she let out a gigantic breath.
He’d done all this for her, expecting nothing in return. Wasn’t that a novel thing, now? A half smile curved her lips. Rose petals and champagne and candles. She peeled off her camisole top and slid out of her pajama pants. Dipping one toe in the water, she watched the circles move away from her foot, making the petals rise and fall on the tiny waves. She got all the way in and reached for the champagne, sampled a strawberry.
And wished she were a stronger woman. Because God help her, she was wishing Ric had never walked out that door tonight, and that wasn’t good.
